MCP504 Proposal Yr. 2

UPDATED PROPOSAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rooted in RED
Lindey Anderson

practical element
Rooted in RED is a project to bring the historically rich, red ochre and traditional mediums such as bear fat into todays art world.  Using a graffiti based composition, the symbol of Rooted in RED are will be painted on a stone medium (building, sidewalk, street) starting in Berlin, Iowa City and multiple sites in Denver, Colorado.   Some installations will be projection based as well.  For shorter times throughout the project.  As the red ochre pictographs will be the focus of we are red, there will be photo and video documentation, and a continued investigation into red ochre throughout the world and more specifically in the Ojibwe culture.

written element
In my interview for Transart, I stated that I want to bring back the importance of the basics in the art.  After the year of research on red pigment throughout time and contemporary uses, I have found red ochre is the root in that world.  It has been a part of most civilizations throughout art and a basic that I believe is extremely crucial to who we are all today.  Expressing the vitality of red ochre was the Ojibwe people, with their red ochre pictographs (Muzzibikon) on the cliffs of northern Minnesota.  The spiritual traditions of the Muzzibikon has inspired me to create my own red ochre pictographs that will be installed in urban settings (modern day cliffs).  The symbol I have created is reflective of the notion that we are all red.  We are all the same, and that we all have the same roots.   I want to paint pictographs to bring a symbol for humans, that will bring awareness to the basics in life in which we bypass.

project results
As a result of this project, I hope that it takes on a mind of its own.  I believe I am planting a seed of something greater and I will nurture and water it, but the exhibition for the pictograph will be all day and everyday someone looks at it, thinks about it, and passes it on.  Documentation will be exhibited in Denver, Colorado.

description of research
I have been lucky enough be introduced to the head of the Ojibwe culture department at the University of Duluth, Minnesota.  She has agreed to pass on vital historical and cultural links to the red ochre and the process and tradition of the Muzzibikon.  I also have been researching the chemical characteristics of red ochre in different parts of the world.  As I feel this is a form of graffiti art, I have been looking to different graffiti and mural artists in which bring more of social cause.  Adina Allen and Andrew Morrison are muralists for social cause and have also been looking a Mexican muralism from the 1920’s.

entire project 2-3 sentences
We are RED, creates a symbol on which humans can find simplicity and realization that we are all tied together by the pigment red ochre.  Bringing back the awareness of basics in our existence and grounding ourselves through a pigment that has touched all of human kind at one point or another.

technical description
Technically a simple project.  Medium being anything stone (street, brick, concrete, etc.) or anything that can support a projected image of the We are RED symbol.  I am using french red ochre powdered pigment and bear fat.  I have a template for a 12"x12" , 2'x2' and 5'x6' installation.  It will be dependent on location for installation.  This project will continue the entire year anywhere I can implement the project to its fullest extent.

past/future projects
We are RED, is a direct continuation of the Dear Red Project.  The Dear Red Project, gave me the opportunity to narrow down the abundant information on red pigment and recognize the correlation of red ochre with my Ojibwe heritage.  Seeing this all come together, fueled the next step in bringing this knowledge in basic, simple form.  All the experience of the past year has made We are RED, the project to bring the power of red ochre to surface again.

conceptual motivation
Every cell of my being told me to do this project.  The aligning of the right research, studio time and meditation surfaced my own red ochre pictograph that I immediately saw in an urban landscape and things escalated from there.  Simply, the immersion in red pigment and Ojibwe culture.  This has become my life.

written element abstract
My written portion will be a guided tour of red ochre through out the world, in specific native cultures that use pictographs.  Researching the techniques and social/spiritual tradition in which they have derived from.

sample of written element?
We are tied together by an earth element in which brought red to the surface as a pigment for creating.  Red ochre a hematite, lies on and in the Earths surface.   Earliest artist used this pigment to communicate to the spirits as one of 3 pigments 30000 years ago, its an amazing endeavor that it is still in use.

possible locations
Berlin, Iowa City, Denver, Colorado

timeline for project
July will kick start the project in Denver, Colorado with an introduction to the pigment and the We Are RED symbol (projection only).  Berlin will be first site of installation (4 sites) and an Iowa City installation in August.  Starting in September, Denver and surrounding towns in Colorado will be the main the focus.

budget
For the year  $300-$400 for pigment and bear fat.
gas/travel and permits if applicable.
